It's been ten days since the last post. Since then Gage has been doing very well. His second attempt at extubation was successful and within a few days they had Gage on only a small amount of oxygen support. About one day after that, they were able to come off the support entirely and Gage now only has his feeding tube.
The Sotalol has either been working or Gage's heart has been behaving because there has been no sign of SVT lately. They moved Gage out of the ICU and over to the acute care side where baby holding is much more prominent. They've finally begun to talk about going home!! Gage will be spending Christmas in Boston or nearby but should be able to come home after.
The only thing besides his SVT that is still a concern at the moment is the fact that he hasn't shown any interest in taking a bottle again. He seems to be avoiding it all together. No trying; only crying. He's taking his beloved "bink" just fine and he's even tried some breast milk. Something about the bottle itself almost, seems to upset him. If Gage can't bottle feed soon he'll have to get a different kind of feeding tube that will be surgically placed at his abdomen.
This is definitely not what we want for Mr. Gage who has been through enough surgery already. Mommy and daddy do not want to feed their baby through a hole in the stomach. We'll be attempting bottle feeds regularly for the next week hoping to get Gage back to normal feeds. We're also looking to pull out a few tricks to try and get him feeding again. It's good to have a smiley Gage again!
